Past Events
Matt and his running partner Lucas Carr first ran the Boston Marathon in 2012. In the beginning, the pair ran to raise awareness for many great organizations, though they always envisioned one day running for an organization of their own.
In 2021, that dream became a reality. For four straight years, Matt and Lucas have crossed the finish line on Boylston Street in support of the Matt Brown Foundation. Due to the incredible generosity of the city of Boston, the foundation has been able to secure an additional bib for an individual to run and fundraise for the foundation.
In the fall of 2024 things amplified. The foundation was accepted into the Official Charity Program for the 129th Boston Marathon, presented by Bank of America. As part of this incredible opportunity, the foundation was awarded five bibs. We were able to select five dedicated and enthusiastic runners whose commitment to fundraising and training will carry them from Hopkinton to Boylston Street on the morning of April 21st, and make this marathon season for the foundation the most memorable one yet. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) and Bank of America for making this long-awaited dream of having a team in the Official Charity Program a reality.
Team History
Matt and his running partner, Lucas Carr, first took on the Boston Marathon in 2012. For years they ran to raise awareness and money for some incredible organizations around the area. However, they had always envisioned that one day they would be able to run for a charity of their own. That dream became true in 2021 and is now a fixture on the calendar every year.
Alongside Matt and Lucas, the foundation has been able to secure an additional bib for an individual to join their team during the last four years. We owe a huge thanks to the city of Boston and to each of our runners for their commitment and sacrifice when they each took on the 26.2 miles themselves!
In 2021, Matt’s childhood friend, Marykate Galvin, answered the call. Due to the pandemic, the Boston Marathon was pushed to the fall and took place on Columbus Day. With the sun shining, Marykate completed her first marathon.
In 2022, the Boston Marathon shifted back to its normal April date. While running the New York City Marathon in 2014 and 2015, Matt and Lucas met Jessica Rooney. Jessica had run New York for the Leary Firefighter’s Foundation and was looking for a way to knock Boston off of her running bucket list. With Jessica living in New York City, her fundraising efforts allowed the foundation to get into the minds of more people outside of Massachusetts and broaden our community support.
Brendan Greene, a college classmate of Matt from Stonehill stepped up in 2023 to take on the Boston Marathon for his first-ever marathon, all in doing so for the Matt Brown Foundation. Mother Nature had a role in this iteration of the historic race as some rain dampened the pavement but not the spirits of those running.
Finally, in 2024, Matt’s cousin Shannon threw her hat in the ring in support of the foundation. Like Marykate and Brendan, the 2024 Boston Marathon was her first-ever marathon and she soared to the finish line.
Through Marykate, Jessica, Brendan, and Shannon’s dedicated efforts, the foundation has been able to raise over $100,000 in the Boston Marathon since 2021. Now that the foundation is part of the Official Charity Program, the 2025 Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America has all the makings of being our most impactful Boston Marathon yet and we are so excited for race day.
